New Delhi, Nov 15 (KNN) Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Ananth Kumar has urged industry leaders to adopt a pro-active approach towards corrosion control in manufacturing activities.

Speaking at CORCON 2014: International Conference and Exposition here yesterday, the minister said the government and the industry, should move with enthusiasm to adopt corrosion control and management techniques, without considering it as a repair and maintenance issue, an official release said.

Controlling corrosion requires significant expenditure, but it is more rewarding in the long run in terms of increased plant safety, better performance and enhanced asset life, said Kumar during the four day international conference held in Mumbai.

Citing prime minister’s emphasis on ‘Make in India’ with zero defect and zero effect on environment, Kumar said corrosion management will facilitate the manufacturing sector to enhance its competitive edge in the global market.

The minister also informed that according to a recent report of the World Corrosion Organization, the annual corrosion cost is approximately USD 2.5 trillion or 3-4 per cent of the global GDP. In India alone, corrosion cost is estimated at around USD 67 billion (over Rs 4 lakh crore).

In the fertilizer industry too, corrosion is a major concern due to corrosive nature of raw materials, he said.

Experts and manufacturers facilitated ideas exchange at CORCON 2014. The event also showcased products like corrosion preventing products and services, measures and metals of least corrosion acceptance. (KNN/ST)
