India’s Power Transmission Network Surpasses 5 Lakh Circuit Kilometres
New Delhi, Jan 22 (KNN) India’s national power transmission network has surpassed 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm), hitting a new record in the country's electricity distribution network.
This achievement was marked on 14 January 2026 with the commissioning of a 628 ckm transmission line of 765 kV connecting Bhadla II to Sikar II substation for evacuation of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Bhadla, Ramgarh, and Fatehgarh Solar Power Complexes.
The new line enables an additional 1,100 MW of power transfer from these renewable energy zones, as per a statement from Power Ministry.
Since April 2014, India’s transmission network has expanded by 71.6 per cent , adding 2.09 lakh ckm of transmission lines.
Inter-regional power transfer capacity now stands at 1,20,340 MW, reinforcing the vision of “One Nation – One Grid – One Frequency” and ensuring seamless electricity flow across regions.
Ongoing transmission projects aim to further strengthen grid infrastructure. Inter-state transmission initiatives under implementation are expected to add around 40,000 ckm of lines and 399 GVA of transformation capacity, while intra-state projects are projected to contribute an additional 27,500 ckm of lines and 134 GVA of capacity.
These expansions will enhance grid reliability and improve the evacuation of increasing non-fossil power generation, supporting India’s target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The milestone of 5 lakh ckm of transmission lines reflects the government’s sustained efforts to ensure reliable, affordable, and secure electricity supply while facilitating rapid integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
