KMC setting up a committee to make a scientific disposal strategy for plastic waste

New Delhi, Dec 18 (KNN) The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), with the Bengal State Government’s aim of reducing the use of plastic (and replacing it with environment-friendly materials), is setting up a committee to chalk out a scientific disposal strategy for plastic waste.

It is also launching an entrepreneurship development programme for the same purpose.

These announcements were made by the mayor of Kolkata on Monday, December 10, after a meeting with officials of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department.

The KMC will also seek assistance from Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd., which has been carrying out plastic waste management efficiently.

A structured waste disposal programme would be of immense value, as plastic waste is generated in huge quantities in the city on a daily basis.

SWM Department officials are also instructed by the mayor, to complete all the formalities for the handing over of a 20-acre plot at Chapna Mouza in Rajarhat in a week’s time.

This land will be utilised by the civic body for dumping waste and a part of it for its waste-to-energy project.

The waste disposal strategy committee would be under the leadership of experts from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB).
