VinFast Seeks India Component Suppliers As Supply Chain Diversification Continues

Chennai, Aug 4 (KNN) Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is actively pursuing partnerships with component suppliers in India as part of its broader strategy to diversify sourcing operations, according to the company's Asia CEO.

The discussions come as global manufacturers increasingly seek alternatives to China-centric supply chains amid rising geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions, reported Reuters.

Pham Sanh Chau, VinFast's Asia CEO, disclosed during the inauguration of the company's Indian manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi that several current component suppliers are considering relocating portions of their production operations to India.

The southern Indian city facility represents a significant investment in the company's international expansion strategy.

The shift toward India-based manufacturing reflects broader industry trends as companies respond to evolving geopolitical dynamics and cost pressures that have made exclusive reliance on Chinese manufacturing less attractive.

Chau indicated that interest extends beyond existing suppliers, noting inquiries from Vietnamese manufacturers, including one considering relocating plastic production specifically to support VinFast's automotive operations.

VinFast plans to begin distributing vehicles through Indian showrooms later this month, though specific pricing details and exact launch dates remain undisclosed.

The development marks a significant milestone for the Vietnamese automaker's presence in the Indian market.

The Indian manufacturing facility operates under a substantial investment framework established through an agreement between VinFast and Tamil Nadu state authorities.

The partnership envisions total investments reaching up to USD 2 billion, with an initial commitment of USD 500 million allocated for the first five years of operations. The plant's designed capacity allows for annual production of up to 150,000 vehicles.

Beyond serving the domestic Indian market, the facility has already secured international orders from Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Mauritius.

Chau emphasised that these initial overseas contracts position the Indian plant as a potential export-oriented manufacturing hub, though immediate priorities focus on meeting Indian customer demand.

VinFast has established ambitious global delivery targets for 2025, aiming to reach 200,000 vehicle sales worldwide. The company reported approximately 72,100 unit sales during the first half of the current year, with the majority of deliveries concentrated in its Vietnamese home market.

The Indian facility's operational capacity represents a crucial component in achieving these expanded sales objectives.
