New Delhi, Feb 13 (KNN) In order to promote manufacturing in India under ‘Make in India’ programme, both states and centre governments need to take up quality reforms in the labour related laws. While the Centre has already taken steps in amending important labour legislations like Apprentices Act, 1961 and the labour Laws (Exemption from Furnishing Returns and Maintaining Registers by Certain Establishments) Amendment Act, 2014.

Other labour legislations in the pipeline for amendments include the Factories Act, 1948, Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952 etc. Now it is the turn of the state government to make the laws within their jurisdiction more user friendly. These issues figure prominently in a note circulated by the NITI Aayog for the first meeting of its governing council held on February 8, 2015.

Chief ministers of all states are members of the governing council of NITI Aayog and they have a major role to play in liberalising the regulatory regime for the manufacturing sector. The note also mentions that while states like, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh have already amended draconian provisions of laws like Contract Labour Act, 1970, other states need to come forward in this regard. It also mentions about the various labour welfare measures taken by the Modi led government in the areas of social security and provident funds. (KNN Bureau)
