Chennai, Jun 28 (KNN) The Tamil Nadu government has launched a significant initiative to preserve and promote its rich handloom heritage while simultaneously advancing its textile industry.

In a recent announcement, Handlooms and Textiles Minister R. Gandhi revealed a multifaceted approach to strengthen the state's textile sector, with a spotlight on securing Geographical Indication (GI) tags for five iconic handloom products.

The handlooms department has allocated Rs 15 lakh for obtaining GI tags for five traditional varieties of handloom products. These include Chinnalapatti silk saris, Koorainadu saris, Nagarcoil vaeti, Uuraiyur saris, and Gudiyatham lungis.

Simultaneously, the textiles department is introducing technical textile courses in polytechnics and industrial training institutes.

Minister Gandhi highlighted several achievements, including the early distribution of free dhotis and saris for Pongal and an expanded school uniform program providing four sets per student.

The government has also opened 18 new Co-optex showrooms in the last three years, bringing the total to 154 across India.

Looking ahead, the department plans to establish mini handloom parks in Dindigul district and Chinalampatti, modeled after the successful park in Kancheepuram.

A new sales centre in Jaipur, Rajasthan, is proposed with an investment of Rs 66 lakh. Additionally, a study on manufacturing sport-tech and athleisure wear is underway, signalling the industry's diversification into growing markets.

By balancing traditional craftsmanship with innovation, the state aims to position its textile industry for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
