India Sets USD 2 Billion Organic Food Export Target By 2030, APEDA Hosts Northeast Organic Week

Shillong, Dec 2 (KNN) The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) said on Monday that India is targeting USD 2 billion in organic food exports by 2030.

The announcement came as policymakers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters and global buyers gathered in Shillong for the first Northeast India Organic Week, reported BS.

The update comes as India’s organic production has risen sharply from 13.35 lakh tonnes in 2015-16 to 46.99 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, recording a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 per cent.

Organic food exports have grown from USD 213 million in 2012-13 to USD 665 million in 2024-25.

APEDA said the Shillong event is focused on strengthening certification, traceability, market access and capacity building, especially to tap into the northeast’s organic potential.

The authority is also hosting an exhibition featuring Lakadong turmeric, organic ginger, pineapple, teas and orchids, along with a Buyer-Seller Meet involving 27 buyers from 14 countries.

Global demand for organic products continues to expand, with retail sales touching USD 147 billion in 2023 on the back of rising urbanisation, health awareness and preference for sustainable food systems.

India recorded 4 million hectares under organic cultivation in 2024-25, including 2.25 million hectares of certified land.

The growing organic ecosystem is expected to benefit MSMEs engaged in processing, packaging, value addition and export-oriented supply chains.

Increased global demand, along with APEDA’s emphasis on certification and market access, is likely to create new opportunities for small enterprises and FPO led micro units in the northeast and other organic clusters.
