FSSAI extends date for use of existing labels for seasoning till June 30th, 2018

New Delhi, Mar 12 (KNN) Considering the representations made by the Food Business Operators (FBOs), the last date for use of existing labels for seasoning has been extended till June 30th, 2018.

In a notification Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said, “After due consideration of representations received from many stakeholders, it has been decided to further extend the permission to use the existing labels for seasoning up to June 30th, 2018 in alignment with the time allowed for use of old labels in respect of instant noodles.”

FSSAI, however added that, “FBO shall comply with standards prescribed for seasoning as specified in the notification.”

In August 2017, FSSAI had prescribed standards for seasoning and other products. Subsequently in November 2017 the FSSAI had issued directions regarding the extension of time period for use of existing labels already printed on packaging material as “seasoning and condiments (Proprietary food).

In August 2017, FSSAI, through a gazette notification, had prescribed new standards for seasonings and other products. This requires that the food product category “seasoning” has to be printed on the label.

“Seasoning” will replace the existing food product category, “seasoning and condiments (proprietary food)”.

Meanwhile, many FBOs have the labels printed as “seasoning and condiments (Proprietary food)” on the packaging material in the food items in stock they already have.

In this regard, the FSSAI has received a number of representations from stakeholders and after due consideration has decided to further extend the permission to use existing labels for seasoning. (KNN Bureau)
