MP to secure Geographical Indication tag for Kadaknath black chicken meat

New Delhi, Apr 9 (KNN) Madhya Pradesh will soon secure the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kadaknath black chicken meat, an Indian Poultry breed reared by the tribal communities.

The Geographical Indication registry office in Chennai has finally given acceptance in principle and the application was advertised and accepted in the Geographical Indications Journal, Number #104, dated March 28, 2018.

According to the statement given by officials, after 120 days from the date of publication of the journal, the state would get the certificate if things go well.

Officials said it is expected that the Madhya Pradesh will receive the Geographical indication tag by the end of July.

As per a set procedure the time is given for raising objections after publication in March so that later no claims come forward after the issue of final certificate, official added.

Kadaknath which is known for its delicious black meat (‘kali-masi’) is the bone of contention between MP and Chhattisgarh.

Both the states had claimed its GI registry, while MP staked its claim in 2012; Chhattisgarh did so four months ago.

Animal husbandry officials in the state told the press that it took five years for them to prove that the bird originated in MP’s Alirajpur.

He further informed that the Gramin Vikas Trust of Alirajpur district filed for GI patent and the animal husbandry department supported it.

Rajesh Khare, chairman of CII, MP state council, said that Kadaknath black chicken meat, is famous for its unique black color of feather as well as black meat, which is claimed to contain low cholesterol level  with medicinal properties as compared to the routine table chicken.

CII’s Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre (IPFC) at Indore, with the support of ministry of MSME, helped the state in filing the GI application, and entitled ‘Jhabua Kadaknath Black Chicken Meat’.

The CII team visited the site for documenting the ground level information for protecting Kadaknath.

Kadaknath is found mainly in the tribal district of Jhabua and reared mainly by the tribal community of Bhil & Bhilala in the districts of Jhabua and Dhar.

 It is locally known as Kalamasi and is used for treatment of many diseases in human beings and also considered as aphrodisiac.
