Bengaluru, Sept 4 (KNN)  The Karnataka government will develop and upgrade eight clusters around the state capital to attract investors and decongest Bengaluru.

The Karnataka government is drawing up Rs 2,100 crore for this project with loan assistance from the Asian Development Bank.

The city clusters proposed to be developed are Nelamangala, Magadi, Anekal, Bidadi, Dabaspet, Harohalli, Devanahalli and Hoskote, urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said earlier this week.

“The objective is to attract investment to these clusters. A detailed project report on Phase-I of the Rs 8,759-crore suburban rail system for Bengaluru comprising five corridors connecting the IT City to Tumkur, Ramanagara and Bangarpet among others would be completed soon. A Special Purpose Vehicle – Bangalore Suburban Rail Corporation – will be set up to implement the project hoped to ease congestion in the city,” Sorake said.

Noting that urbanization has caused huge migration to cities resulting in the shortage of basic urban infrastructure, a media report quoting Sorake said, “From the 2001 Census (2001) to Census 2011, there has been a three per cent increase in population and nearly 40 per cent of the population now resides in cities. This demands better infrastructure and thus higher funding from both the Centre and the State. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) is in a transition phase and we can include other cities under its purview.”

As many as 61 projects worth Rs 5,265.22 crore are awaiting the Centre’s approval, while projects worth Rs 168 crore have been approved. Proposals for 17 water supply projects with estimated cost of Rs 711.92 crore have been submitted to the Central government under Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT).

The Minister also spoke about the World Bank-funded Rs 1,760 crore project to provide 24X7 water supply to Belgaum, Gulbarga and Hubli-Dharwad city corporations on Private-public Partnership model and state-level heritage-based urban development programme for Karnataka has been prepared .

Sorake also said that a project was under preparation for state-level heritage-based urban development programme for Karnataka with World Bank assistance.

He said a master plan would be prepared in phases to project requirements of cities of Karnataka in the year 2040. (KNN)
