Guwahati, Jun 3 (KNN)  The Government of Assam has undertaken various measures to obtain geographical indication (GI) rights over indigenous handloom products and designs in an attempt to safeguard traditional handloom and bell metal industries in the state.

Products for which the government seeks GI rights are Assamese gamocha, dakhona and other tribal ethnic products and the Sarthebari kah (bell metal) industry, according to a media report.

Research is underway to facilitate petitions by the Handloom and Textile Directorate and the Industries Department.

Further, during a meeting held last month, the state level committee which is responsible for the registration and protection of handloom production and designs of Assam has called for the formation of a sub-committee headed by the state Director of Handloom and Textiles and with members from expert groups to look into obtaining the necessary GI rights over the local handloom and textile products.

However, the task of collecting and documenting ethnic designs of the different tribes in the region and obtaining GI rights for the fabrics and designs would rest with the Handloom Research and Designing Centre of the Handloom and Textile Directorate.  (KNN)
