Bengaluru, Aug 8 (KNN)  CII President, S Gopalakrishnan has urged the Karnataka Government to set up incubators in partnership with 10 engineering colleges.

Making this plea before Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah  here yesterday, Gopalakrishnan who is also the executive vice chairman of Infosys said, of the ten engineering colleges to be chosen for incubators, seven should be in Bengaluru and three outside the city.

Earlier Siddaramaiah inaugurating a CII conference on innovation said, “I am told there are 120 incubators in India – almost all are government sponsored and largely affiliated to educational institutions.  The number of incubators needs to be increased.”

Incubators are generally programmes that support a group of budding entrepreneurs through mentorship and a network of contacts.

He offered full support, assuring that he would put in place measures to promote growth of industry and attract investments.

Karnataka, he said was ideally placed to meet the national agenda of establishing a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in India and has been a role model for the rest of the country.  However, though Bengaluru was emerging as an attractive destination for risk capital, there was a further need to improve the entrepreneurial ecosystem by enhancing availability of risk capital to entrepreneurs at their start-up stage.

Explaining why Bengaluru was an integral part of the global IT story, Gopalakrishnan said, “Bangalore supports around 30-40 per cent of Fortune 500 companies across the world.”

However, he said that government support was critical for the growth of the industry.  (KNN/ES)
