Bengaluru, Aug 5 (KNN)  In keeping with the National Manufacturing Policy, the Government of Karnataka has constituted a Manufacturing Task Force (MTF) to formulate a vision and strategy document to enhance the share of manufacturing sector to the gross state domestic product (GSDP).

The MTF has begun its task of collecting the required input and interacting with various stake holders, according to Commissioner Industries, Government of Karnataka, MM Rao.

Having been appointed knowledge partner for MTF, Grant Thornton Advisory Pvt Ltd will be contacting all the stakeholders, associations etc for collection of suggestions and inputs.

Towards this, a request letter addressed to all the stakeholders and associations has been sent through courier and it is hoped that they would provide all the required inputs.

To draw a blueprint to boost the manufacturing sector and its contribution to at least 25 per cent of the GSDP in the coming years was the objective of the high level task force set up by the state government.

The move came against the backdrop of the sector showing a below national average share of 14.26 per cent of the GDP (Economic Survey of Karnataka 2012-13) compared to the all India figures of 15.6 per cent for the same fiscal.

Headed by former MD of Bosch, V K Viswanathan, the task force included representatives from a wide range of industries and associations.  Coming on the heels of the Centre’s announcement of the National Manufacturing Policy, it is expected to enhance the share of manufacturing to GDP and create 100 million jobs during the next 10 years.

The task force also covered the entire range of industries from the micro, small and medium industries to the large scale ones.

Meanwhile, Karnataka chief minister K Siddaramaiah has also been pushing for increased industrialization of the state.  According to a report last month, he said that the Centre had granted approval for setting up a 12,000 acre national investment manufacturing zone near Tumkur district.

The state government was also trying to get approval for another two such zones, he said.

The Karnataka Government with an objective of increasing GSDP, strengthening the manufacturing sector, generation of additional employment in different sectors, promoting diversified Industrial base and reducing regional imbalances and also increasing the share of exports from Karnataka in the national exports, has taken up a number of initiatives like New Industrial Policy 2009-2014, State Special Economic Zone Policy 2009 and Suvarna Karnataka Textile Policy, and Karnataka Mineral Policy.

The main mission of Industrial Policy 2009-14 is to create an environment for robust industrial growth; ensure inclusive industrial development in the state; provide additional employment for about 10 lakhs persons by 2014; enhance the contribution of manufacturing sector to the State’s GDP from the current level of 17 per cent to 20 per cent by the end of policy period.  (KNN/ES)
