Karnataka govt sets up task force to boost manufacturing

Bengaluru, Sept 19 (KNN) The Karnataka Chief Minister has set up a task force to recommend measures for boosting the manufacturing sector's contribution to the gross state domestic product.
Further, the Karnataka government is setting up National Investment and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZ) across the state to enable investors to set up industries across verticals, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at an event.
The central government has approved the state's proposal to set up the first NIMZ in 12,500 acres of land at Dobbespet in Tumkur district, about 70 km from Bangalore.
Tumkur, which is fairly near to Bangalore, is already an extension for Bangalore as far as industrial development is concerned. It is home to 24 large scale industries with an investment of Rs 911.42 crore and generating employment for over 6445 persons.
The existing 8 medium scale and 23804 small scale employ 132994 persons and account for an investment of close to 790 crore as of March 2012.
The small and medium industrial units are resource based industries are such as rice mills industries, granite cutting and polishing vermicelli, condiments, and coir products.
The Chief Minister also said that his government has applied for approval to set up two more NIMZs at Kolar and Gulbarga in the northern region of the state to increase the sectoral share of manufacturing in the state GDP to 12-14 per cent during the 12th plan period (2012-17).
Under the National Manufacturing Policy (NMP), it is proposed to set up NIMZ. NIMZs will be developed as integrated industrial townships with state-of-the art infrastructure and land use on the basis of zoning; clean and energy efficient technology; necessary social infrastructure; skill development facilities, etc, to provide a productive environment to persons transitioning from the primary sector to the secondary and tertiary sectors.
The State has a number of traditional cottage, handicrafts, micro enterprises like handlooms, power looms, silk weavers, khadi and village industries etc.
The state government has also set up a skill development corporation and vocational training centre in Bangalore to meet the growing requirement of the industry in manufacturing and services sectors.
The national manufacturing policy envisages increasing the sectoral share of manufacturing in the GDP to 25 per cent over the next decade and generating 100 million jobs in the sector through an annual average growth rate of 12-14 per cent.
Siddaramaiah also mentioned the setting up of four help desks in Indian embassies in Germany, Japan, Taiwan and the US to attract FDI to help investors from these countries to explore opportunities in manufacturing and infrastructure sectors in the state.
