Srinagar, Aug 6 (KNN)  Every hand woven Kashmiri Pashmina shawl will henceforth get a GI (Geographical Indication) mark, imprinted in the form of a label, after it is tested for originality of fabric, fineness of thread, spinning method and weaving technology.

The Kashmir Pashmina GI mark was launched here yesterday by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah during the inauguration of the Testing and Quality Certification Centre at the Craft Development Centre, according to a media report.

Details of the manufacturer and quality of the shawl will also be indicated on the label.

The move is expected to restore the glory of Kashmiri handicrafts and lead to the economic prosperity of the artisans, towards which the state has initiated all possible measures.

Significantly, it would dissuade the sale of fake handicrafts being sold in the state in the name of Kashmir.  The testing laboratory at the Craft Development Institute would go a long way to ensure genuineness.

The Government of J&K had already obtained geographic indication for six Kashmiri handicrafts namely, Pashmina, Sozni-embroidery, Kani-shawl, Papier Mache, Khatamband and Walnut Woodcarving and these products would be given similar testing facilities and GI marks.

The GI status is a sort of trademark or a patent given to the products which are indigenous to a community in a particular geographical region.

GI registration acts as certificate that the product is made by traditional methods and possesses certain qualities specific to the area and the community.  (KNN/ES)
