Hyderabad, May 6 (KNN) Giving a sigh of relief to cottage and small scale industries, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday ordered lifting of curbs on power consumption by small and cottage industries from May-15.

The chief minister issued the directive soon after he reviewed the power situation at a high-level meeting at the Secretariat, following which power utilities announced the decision to provide relief to this category of industries which provide employment to lakhs of people.

At present, the duration of the power cuts has already been reduced from eight hours to six hours in the mandal headquarters following a slight improvement in the availability of power.

Further, it has been decided to lift the ban on giving new connections to industries from May 15.

The chief minister has also asked the officials to see that power cuts for domestic sector particularly in rural areas were reduced.  Assuring them that he would write to the Union power minister regarding grid connectivity, he asked them to ensure that 240 to 250 million units power was produced per day on an average.

Even as they briefed the chief minister about the steps taken to augment power supply during the rabi season, the officials presented details of the immediate measures taken to meet the power situation, power supply position, demand-supply gap and steps taken to meet the deficit, power purchase as well as long term and short term measures to overcome the power situation.

In all likelihood the situation will ease in the month of October when the Krishnapatnam 1st stage is completed which will ensure 800 MW power supply.

Further, when the 2nd stage is completed by December, the Hinduja power plant will generate 520 MW power.

Officials have claimed that no single acre of crop had dried up in the state during the just-concluded rabi season because of proper supply of power to the farm sector, though at the cost of domestic and industrial consumers.

The Chief Minister approved the unit price finalized by the Cabinet Sub-Committee on power issues at Rs 6.49 per unit to procure power from solar plants planned.

He has asked officials to encourage power entrepreneurs who are willing to set up solar power plants as per the norms prescribed by the group of ministers.

As per his directions, the NEDCAP officials will take up roof top solar net metering on a pilot basis on government welfare hostel buildings.

Letters would be issued to developers of solar units from today, offering this price and asking them to indicate the location of their plant, an AP Transco official said.

It may be recalled that as many as 331 bids were received from developers seeking to set up solar plants for an installed capacity of 1,780 MW, though tenders were called merely for 1,000 MW.

Others who attended the meeting were Finance Minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy, Roads and Buildings Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao, Principal Secretary Energy M Sahoo, APTRANSCO MD Hiralal Samariya, APGENCO MD Vijayanand, NEDCAP MD Kamalakar Babu and secretary to Chief Minister K S Jawahar Reddy.  (KNN)
