New Delhi, Jun 18 (KNN)  Heavy rains for the fourth consecutive day in hilly areas of northern India have not only taken more than 70 lives but also caused big losses to trade and industry.

The worst sufferers are the micro and small enterprises as also those running restaurants, hotels and transport.

The movement of passengers and goods has been disrupted for the last two days as several rivers in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are in spate.

While officials have not so far estimated any loss, it is feared that property worth several crore has been damaged in the floods which followed the early arrival of monsoons in northern parts of the country.

More than 70,000 pilgrims are stranded at various places, some bound for the Himalayan shrines and others on the route to the Chardham Yatra in Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath.

Upper districts of Uttarkhand such as Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi were the worst hit with more than 450 roads seriously damaged.  Several trains have been cancelled.

Tourists have been advised not to travel into remote areas of Kinnaur, Shimla and Sirmaur as more heavy rain is expected.

Reports said that a number of shrines, hotels, shops and residential buildings have been flooded. Tourists have been forced to spend their holiday indoors.

In many places the rivers are flowing above the danger mark, entering homes, villages, washing away roads and causing landslides.

The Air force, army and National Disaster Response Force have been involved in rescue operations, evacuation and airdrop of food packets. (KNN)
