New Delhi, June 4 (KNN)  In a move to make marginalised carpet weavers self-reliant the Jammu and Kashmir government will provide 8,000 modern carpet looms to them.

“As many as 8,000 modern carpet looms are being provided to carpet weavers under mega carpet clusters scheme.  Of these 2,000 looms are being provided this year,” said Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah.

The government is also planning a 24 crore heritage and cluster development programme to help the artisans.   The project involves promoting craft clusters in areas like Jamia, Safakadal, Qamarwari, Idgah, Noorbagh, Chattabal, Soura, Zadibal and Botapora which will act as a meeting point between the tourists and manufacturers.

The scheme will be extended to areas such as Habbakadal, Chinkral, Mohalla, Maharaj Gunj etc.

Further, in order to provide various facilities including giving easy loans from the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, the state government is in the process of registering artisans names.

The government is also working out a plan to develop a heritage craft trail from Nawakadal to Chattabal and a river front craft plaza will be developed under the scheme on the model followed in Muscat, New York, China and Sabarmati in India. (KNN)
