Power supply in AP likely to improve by October

Though shortfall in supply will continue during May and also the subsequent months, power is being purchased to meet the demand, APTRANSCO Chairman and MD Hiralal Samariya told reporters.
Further, they have ensured that the rabi crop will not suffer any damage.
The Krishnapatnam plant will generate 800 MW of power from October and an additional 800 MW will be generated in January-February. Also, 600 MW will come from the Kakatiya facility, he said.
Krishnapatnam Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) is an upcoming 3,960 MW imported coal-based power project in Nellore district of coastal Andhra Pradesh. This was the second UMPP awarded to Reliance Power in November 2007.
The concept of UMPPs is the Government of India’s initiative to meet the growing gap between demand and supply of power. Its objective is to build large capacities at low costs in order to sell power at low tariffs to consumers.
Samariya also said 520 MW would come by October/November and another 520 MW by January 2014 from a private power plant. In addition over 350 MW power was expected from NTPC.
APTRANSCO had planned to get 4,300 MW of which 3,000 MW is assured by the year-end. In addition, a new line from the western corridor, which can carry a capacity of 2,200 MW, is coming up, although it would be available only by January next year.
"After October, we will be in a little better condition. We hope we get good monsoon in June and we will be able to pass through kharif season in a better way."
Currently, with the increasing demand of power and severe shortage of natural resources, only 9,500 MW power is being generated despite having 16,335 MW of installed capacity to generate power.
The demand was 297 MU (million units) per day in March last year and it has now crossed 310 MU/day.
Several measures have been implemented to overcome the power crisis. Power cuts of eight hours' duration in mandal headquarters, two hours in district headquarters, four hours in municipalities and towns are being imposed now.
Efforts will be made to provide relief to domestic consumers first and then other sectors, he said.
The Government is also making efforts to get about 500 MW from non-conventional energy sources while 1,000 MW of wind power is expected by March 2014. (KNN)
