Reopening of fertilizer plant to give boost to local industries

Gorakhpur, July 22 (KNN) Fulfilling key poll promises made to Purvanchal or Eastern UP region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone for two important projects in the region — the revival of a long defunct fertilizer plant and an AIIMS hospital, both in Gorakhpur, nerve centre of the impoverished region.

The Union cabinet had recently approved the two projects considered key to the economic, medical and agrarian development of the region.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said “We decided we will give farmers as much urea as we can. But first, start the defunct fertilizer plants and all these are in Eastern UP and Bihar.”

Talking to KNN, the President of Indian Industries Association (IIA), Manish Goel said that local industries like packaging, transport will be benefited after the opening of the plant. Apart from this employment would be created.

“Electrical parts, motors and others industries will be boosted. It is a good move by the government”, he said

He informed that the Fertilizer Corporation of India plant was closed around 40 years back which was coal based plant. They have upgraded the plant and started it again.

However, President said that Eastern UP has not seen the industrialization. Government did not focus that part of the country so the development work did not take place there.

“Power and infrastructure crises are always there. Agro based industries like sugar and rice is there”, he complained.

Established in 1969, the fertilizer plant in Gorakhpur was shut for the last 26 years. It is estimated to run on gas fuel to produce up to 3,850 tonnes urea per day against its earlier capacity of around 950 tonne. It will be revived at a cost of Rs 6000 crore. (KNN Bureau)
