Kolkata, Feb 9 (KNN) The Minister for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and Textiles of West Bengal has appointed an award winning weaver from Fulia in Nadia district to come up with the designs for sarees based on state's 'Kanyashree Scheme'.

Kanyashree Scheme was an initiative of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Fulia is famous for Jamdani saris and so, naturally, the designs would be created on such saris,” All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) said.

The saris will be displayed at Biswa Bangla stalls in Kolkata’s Dakshinapan, in Darjeeling and at the various airports.

The saris will showcase the rigorous crafting and delicate details that Jamdani saris are known for. The design consists of a collage of schoolgirls, Bengali alphabets and verses by Kazi Nazrul Islam woven on them, along with the Kanyashree logo.

Through these saris, not only would the Chief Minister’s pioneering initiative for the welfare of schoolgirls be held up, but also the glory of the exquisite craftsmanship that the hand-woven Jamdani sari is known for, AITC added.

In another initiative, the West Bengal Government is making all arrangements for setting up a research station of Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) in Paschim Medinipur district.

CPRI is an exclusive centre for potato research, which was established in Shimla in 1935.

For the purpose, the State Government has allotted 50 acres to CPRI. “We have already chosen a plot in Paschim Medinipur for setting up a seed processing plant to increase potato production in the state as per the climatic conditions available here,” said Arup Roy, Minister of Agriculture.

On an average, farmers in West Bengal spend Rs 600 for producing one quintal of potatoes. The setting up of the seed processing unit will enable farmers to procure seeds from within the state and thus bring down the cost of production, AITC said. (KNN Bureau)
