Chennai, Apr 29 (KNN) Condemning the central government's decision to allot only 925 MW power to Tamil Nadu, the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) has demanded that the 2000 Mega Watt power to be generated from the Kudankulam nuclear power plant be allotted exclusively to Tamil Nadu for the first two years.

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power station in Koodankulam, located in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

“Tamil Nadu is facing the worst power crisis in comparison to other southern states like Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry,” said MADITSSIA President V S Manimaran to KNN.

The association had taken up the issue with the government last year but only received a reply earlier this month where the Under Secretary, Power, CD Chako, said that the entire power generated from Kudankulam plant cannot be given to Tamil Nadu.

The association members of MADITSSIA had even staged an agitation near Parliament House in New Delhi on December-11 last year in this regard.

Reiterating the need for additional power for the state, “We get uninterrupted power from 12 pm to 6 pm and there is no power from 6 pm to 10 pm. The entire state is crippled by a severe shortfall of power. The state needs 13,500 MW of power during peak season but gets only 8,500 MW power. The government is not even taking power from other states. Gujarat is even ready to give us power,’ Manimaran said.

Further, while Chennai has only two hours of power cut, other parts of the state have 16 hours of power cut.

“The Congress Government is being partial.  They had assured us that power cuts will be passé by December, but we are still facing the worst power problems,” he added.
Also, when MADITSSIA had taken the issue to the Prime Minister’s Office, they have received a reply on April 16 in which the Department of Atomic Energy conveyed through Chako, that power to be generated from Kudankulam plant had been allotted by the Ministry of Power among the beneficiary states back in 2004 itself.

According to a media report, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation had submitted a report to Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission earlier this year which projected a shortfall of anywhere between 600 MW and 2000 MW for the year 2013-14.  (KNN)
