Kolkata, May 22 (KNN) The Government of West Bengal proposes to open sales outlet under the ‘BENCRAFT’ brand for marketing of handicrafts and other handmade products. It will also build urban and rural haats for extending direct marketing facilities to artisans and weavers.

“The state government will open sales outlet under the brand name BENCRAFT for the marketing support to the artisans of handicrafts, handloom weavers, silk and khadi weavers,” said the draft investment and industrial policy of West Bengal 2013.

It has also been decided to set up urban haats at Durgapur, Santiniketan, Kolkata and in Siliguri for marketing of handicrafts manufactured by the state artisans.

Similarly, rural haats are being set up to provide marketing assistance to the handicrafts and village industries artisans.

Under backward region grant fund of Rs three crore for each project has been approved for construction of rural haats at Alipurduar in Jalpaiguri, Bishnupur in Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram in Paschim Medinipur.

The project is scheduled to be completed in nine months from the date of starting of construction work.

Meanwhile, the draft investment and industrial policy said, the state government has launched micro and small enterprise cluster development programme (MSE-CDP) which includes 48 clusters. These clusters are expected to cover 47,841 manufacturing units and generate employment for 334,690 persons.

So far 105 clusters have been identified in West Bengal, out of which 48 clusters have been selected for implementation.

Recently, the industrial policy documents have been placed in the public domain by the state government for seeking suggestions till June-30.

Moreover, out of these 48 clusters, 20 are in the soft intervention and 20 in hard intervention stages. Four micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) clusters have been taken up for diagnostic study and four are in detailed project report (DPR) stage.

At present 39 handloom clusters (with 300-500 workers in each cluster) are operational in the state with about 16,000 in employment. Group approach is being taken up in 91 proposed handloom groups (with 70-100 workers) with about 6500 beneficiaries.

The state has 31 functional MSME industrial estates and 10 commercial estates. Seven more manufacturing units are coming up in the state.

Further, under MSE-CDP there is a plan to set up more clusters under the joint initiative of the state and centre for implementation of soft interventions like trust building, market development, technology upgradation, capacity building and training.  (KNN)
